Newton is the county seat of Sussex County. The town grew up at the intersection of two roads which followed Lenni Lenape Indian trails. European settlers used the crossroads location to their advantage in pursuit of a viable trading location. Today Newton is a thriving town with an abundance of historic buildings. Architectural styles range from the Greek Revival County Courthouse (which has just received a major renovation) to lovely Victorian homes to gracious colonials on properties with beautiful landscaping. In addition there are apartments and new construction.
Spring Street with its sidewalks, beautiful lampposts hung with flags, or baskets of flowers, or wreaths depending on the season, storefronts filled with sparkling white lights in the evening, and interesting buildings is the center of the town. Here you can find antiques, a great chocolate shop, and restaurants that have received rave reviews - among them Andre's. Another great restaurant in Newton which is located on Clinton Street is Krave. Open for lunch and dinner, the food is beautifully prepared and you can bring your own wine. A newer addition to Spring Street is A La Mode, a gourmet cheese shop where you can taste before you buy, which also has wonderful bread, sauces, cookbooks, and other gift items. A La Mode is also an old-fashioned ice-cream parlor in the old Book Shelf. It has a beautiful pink awning out front - you can't miss it!
