About Sparta

Probably the best known town in Sussex County is Sparta which includes the "Reservation" within Sparta known as Lake Mohawk. Sparta covers 38.5 square miles, has an elevation of up to 1,200 ft. and is located about 50 miles from New York City. Most of Sparta's wage earners work elsewhere, many commuting outside the County. A large number of airline pilots and personnel, executives and transferees live in Sparta, drawn here by the friendliness of the community, the year-round recreational activities, and the top-notch schools, public and private. Sparta Public Library garnered the designation of best library in the State of New Jersey in 2008.

About Lake Mohawk

Lake Mohawk consists of a private lake community within Sparta with some 2600 homes located around three lakes. The Main Lake is 800 acres where power boating, sailing, rowboating, canoeing, windsurfing, fishing, and swimming are permitted. Eight beaches surround the Main Lake. The Upper Lake is 25 acres with one swimming beach. Here one can enjoy small sailboats, canoes, rowboats, and fishing. The Alpine Pool is an 8-acre man-made pool with its own waterfall, making it a beautiful swimming area. It can be used only by residents of the Alpine area within Lake Mohawk. Lake Mohawk Country Club is listed on the State and National Registers as a National Historic Site.
